The 24 year old Spanish international is apparently seen by the Anfield side as an ideal replacement for exit bound midfielder Steven Gerrard.
The former Real Sociedad man moved to the Bernabeu in July 2013 for a fee of around £25m but has struggled to retain a foothold in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven.
In his first campaign the likes of Luka Modric, Sami Khedira and Xabi Alonso blocked his path and the arrival of Toni Kroos last summer has similarly hampered his progress at the Spanish giants.
Liverpool are ready to fork out £17.5m for Illara though one imagines Rodgers would see Jordan Henderson as a more ‘like for like’ long term replacement for Gerrard, who leaves for the LA Galaxy at the end of the current campaign.
Illarramendi has started just five La Liga fixtures this season and a summer move looks likely.
