The Citizens lost 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday, leaving them five points behind league leaders Chelsea, who have a game in hand. On the same day as this loss, the Blues won the Capital One Cup, starting off their silverware haul early.

Pellegrini has refused to give up, but has admitted that the Sky Blues need to improve if they are to have any chance of overtaking Jose Mourinho’s team.

He said: “I think we never give up about the title. We must try to improve our play first, and after that try to win our next game. You never know in football what will happen. It is more difficult when you have less games and you continue with the same points, but I don’t think the team can think about that.”

Next up, the Etihad outfit play against Leicester City, giving them a chance to get back to winning ways against weaker opposition. The Foxes are bottom of the division, and look unlikely to improve.
