The 40-year-old has become associated with the Conservative Party since his retirement from the game, alongside a new career as a property developer. There had been some rumours that he was going to run to become an MP, but this will at least be a setback.

The Kensington and Chelsea seat had been vacated by Malcolm Rifkind following the ‘cash for access’ controversy. Fellow footballer Frank Lampard has already revealed that he has not been asked to run in the Independent after a similar set of rumours.

The Daily Mail has revealed that Campbell is being lined up to run for London Mayor when Boris Johnson steps down later this year, so this may not be his final effort at a political career.
