The £59.7 million record signing has struggled to hit his best form since arriving at Old Trafford, with his season being disrupted by injuries and constant changing of positions. Van Gaal believes that this is all part of a process of settling in that may take until some point next season to end.

The 63-year-old said: “I think it counts for all the players that we have bought, the first season is always difficult. I have explained that in the press conference after the match. You can see it for every player we have bought, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Radamel Falcao and also Di Maria. For me it is not a big surprise.

He continued: “It is more a big surprise when he adapted as quickly as possible. In Holland, Spain and Germany, I had the same experience with players. We have to give him time, not just Di Maria but all the players. We wait and see.The general answer is one year, but you can’t give a general answer. It is easy to say that, I cannot prove that. It is not scientifically proven.”

This won’t be great news for United fans, who would have been hoping a quicker fix might be possible. With games against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham coming up the Red Devils will need to be in their best form in order to stay in contention for the Premier League top four and the FA Cup.
