The 23 year old Brazilian international is seen by van Gaal as preferable to his current, limited, options on the right-hand side of his defence though a move to sign the former Santos man won’t come cheap.

Danilo’s buyout clause is set at a massive £36.3m, a fee the Old Trafford side are willing to pay, whilst Real Madrid and Liverpool are also known to be keen on the attack minded full-back.

One imagines such a deal will become more likely if van Gaal secures that all important top four finish with a failure to secure Champions League football presumably hampering the chances of any big money signings.

FC Porto signed Danilo back in January 2012 and he played a key role in back to back Primeira Liga title successes though over the past 18 months arch-rivals Benfica have become the dominant force in Portuguese football once more.
