The vote was taken from 123 footballers currently playing in the Premier League, Football League and Scottish leagues as the players were questioned on everything from refereeing to racism in the sport, and their opinion on football pundits.

After the overwhelming favourite, Neville, the next most popular pundit was former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher who appears alongside the former Manchester United player on Sky’s Monday Night Football.

The double act, who were arch-rivals on the football pitch, have won many plaudits among fans and players alike, with a current Championship player saying, “Neville and Carragher are so good, I enjoy watching them more than the game,” while a League One player claimed they have “taken punditry to another level.”

At the other end of the spectrum, Danny Murphy and controversial figure Robbie Savage could only collect one per cent of the vote respectively, with another Championship player saying, “I don’t think the magazine could print what I think about Savage’s punditry.”

BBC’s Alan Shearer, who regularly appears alongside Mark Lawrenson and Gary Lineker on Match of the Day, came third in the poll with 10% of the vote, while former Arsenal player Lee Dixon took three per cent.
