The former midfielder appeared to be unhappy when the Dutchman seemed to grab his cheek in celebration of Ashley Young’s late winner at St James’ Park, but an interview given before the game suggests that the incident should not be read into.

“We’re getting on really well,” Giggs said.

“We have done since the day we met. He’s been brilliant for me. I’m learning all the time.”

There was speculation following the incident that Giggs may be unhappy as van Gaal’s number two at Old Trafford, with former teammate Paul Scholes even suggesting that the 41-year-old may be looking to leave the club in the near future to pursue his own managerial career – having had a taste at the end of last season after the sacking of David Moyes.

But the ex-Wales international has revealed that despite van Gaal’s vast experience in comparison with his own, the Dutchman is actually learning about the English game from Giggs.

“I’m trying to give him that feeling of what the Premier League is like,” he continued.

“What going away to certain games is like. The history against these teams, what’s happened in the past and what can we improve on.”
