The Polish international has been restricted to just two appearances – both in the FA Cup – since he was caught smoking in the showers following the defeat to Southampton on New Year’s Day, but Wilson is confident that the 24-year-old has enough quality to oust Ospina.

“From the time Wojciech got into the Arsenal first team, there were a lot who asked if he was good enough and I thought this boy has the potential to really be a solid, outstanding goalkeeper. I still believe that because he is – for his position – still relatively young,” Wilson explained.

Despite the reprimand, Szczesny is expected to keep his cup place when Arsene Wenger’s side travel to Old Trafford, to face Manchester United for a place at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Defeat for the Gunners may potentially end Szczesny’s first-team involvement this season, as the Columbian keeper Ospina was also preferred in their most recent Champions League game, against Monaco.
