It was an action packed start, although there was a distinct lack of quality from both sides – the pitch no doubt playing its part.

There was a contentious moment early on, when James Hanson was clearly brought down but the free-kick went Reading’s way.

Reading almost opened the scoring through Pavel Pogrebnyak, who came agonisingly close when he struck the post. The ball had actually been run out of play before the cross, and had the giant Russian scored questions definitely would have been asked.

It was the home side’s turn to hit the woodwork next – an Andy Liddell cross sailing all the way through. Adam Federici was expecting a touch, and could only watch helplessly as the ball flew straight through the crowded box and struck the far post.

The first half was close fought, but things started to swing Bradford’s way in the second 45. Andrew Davies had one of the best chances of the game, but fired his header narrowly over the bar.

It was a tense end to the game after Royals captain Alex Pearce took a blow to the nose – blood pouring profusely from a nasty gash.

Reading played most of the remaining minutes with ten men having made all three substitutes, but Bradford couldn’t capitalise.

The game finished goalless, meaning we will see a replay at the Madejski stadium.

You’d have to give Reading the advantage when playing on their own pitch, but anything is possible after Bradford’s win over Chelsea.
