Liverpool have reportedly earmarked Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho as a future replacement for departing skipper Steven Gerrard, yet the Reds will have to fend off interest from rivals Manchester United.

The 22-year-old has a £35m buyout clause written into his contract, and the Premier League duo are expected to battle it out for the defensive midfielder’s signature in the summer, the Daily Mail reports.

Louis van Gaal’s midfield is seriously lacking a powerful general, and the Dutchman considers the Portugal international as a key target that fits the bill. The Red Devils manager is prepared to go head-to-head with Liverpool to stop their Premier League enemy landing a successor to Steven Gerrard.

With 22 league appearances this season, Carvalho has been an important player for Sporting, who sit third in the Primeira Liga table.
