Van Gaal spent upwards of £150m on new players last summer and are still very much in the hunt for a top four spot, and one imagines the Dutch manager’s transfer projections would take a real hit should a Champions League berth not be secured.

Top of his targets is £80m rated Welsh international Gareth Bale, who has become the victim of a fair amount of abuse from a section of the Real Madrid faithful, this despite a very solid run of form over the course of his time in the Spanish capital.

Bale’s return of 36 goals and 23 assists in 81 appearances is one that most would deem more than acceptable but there is a danger that the former Tottenham man could be driven out and a move to Man United may interest the talented 25 year old.

Man United are ready to cut their losses on Angel di Maria, with PSG said to be keen, to help part fund a move for Bale.

Van Gaal has his sights set on another winger, with PSV Eindhoven said to be a player the former Netherlands national team coach covets.

The youngster has been in sublime form this term, leading the Eredivisie goal-scoring charts, helping Philipp Cocu’s side to within touching distance of a domestic title.

Man United are ready to make a £20m bid for the 21 year old.

Van Gaal will also look to boost his defence with a move for long term target Mats Hummels, rated by this source at £30m, and given that Borussia Dortmund are unlikely to secure a Champions League berth for next season a move to the Premier League side may be looking very tempting indeed for the World Cup winner.
