The 63-year-old has received criticism this season for the style of play he has introduced at Old Trafford, as well as the results it has garnered at times in the Premier League. Their most recent defeat to Arsenal has made his detractors even louder, with some even saying that former manager David Moyes should have been given more time at the club.

However Cole, who won five Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, and a Champions League with the Red Devils, claims the Dutchman just needs a bit more time. Not only this, but the ex-striker thinks that the season will still count as successful if the team qualify for next year’s Champions League. This is after a summer in which they spent over £150 million on new transfers.

The 43-year-old said: “Manchester United’s aim is to get back into the European Cup next season. If they do that, that is progression. A new manager has come in, with different ideas, and it is going to take a bit of time. Nothing is built in a day. It is going to take time to get them to play the way he wants to play and hopefully he can be very successful.”
