Doubles from Nabil Fakir and Alex Lacazette, as well as a goal from Corentin Tolisso, ensured that OL retook their spot at the top of the French table having lost it earlier in the weekend.

Heavy victories for their title rivals Olympique Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain had put the pressure on Lyon to prosper against MHSC. They fell behind through an early Lucas Barrios goal but pulled themselves together and responded in emphatic style.

“Considering the physiognomy of the match, the severity was a bit strange,” began Montpellier midfielder Joris Marveaux speaking to L’Equipe.

“We didn’t know how to manage the meeting, but considering Lyon’s efficiency, it’s normal.”

Lyon’s 5-1 triumph puts them one point clear of PSG, while Montpellier end the weekend in seventh spot.

“We must get back to work,” Marveaux continued,”we’re disappointed with what we did, but now we’re moving on.”
