Gundogan, who joined Dortmund from Nurnberg in 2011, has been stalling on signing a new deal with the struggling Bundesliga side.

It is thought he would set the Red Devils back at least £20 million, but the Germans might be willing to sell him for less as his contract starts to wind down.

The tricky midfielder has Turkish ancestry, but opted to represent Germany from a young age. He made in senior international debut in 2011 and has gone on to play eight games for the World Cup winners, scoring two goals.

United are also thought to be close to a deal for Memphis Depay, though a deal for Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne is looking more remote after he opened contract discussions with the south coast club.
