The former Reds centre-back feels that with the amount spent by English clubs, they should really be doing better in the Champions League and the Europa League, but results in both tournaments have been poor in recent weeks, with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur all dropping out while Arsenal and Manchester City look likely to follow.

Carragher feels Premier League teams may be over-spending on signings instead of developing players, which may be part of the problem.

“We should be dominating European football considering the financial aspect of the Premier League,” he said.

“I don’t know if our clubs are getting kidded when they buy players from abroad, because of the players we are bringing in and the prices we are paying.

“Maybe because they have so much money you can bring a player in but, if it doesn’t quite work out you still have the money to bring another in instead of developing players.”
