Besides Fabbiani’s football skills, he became popular with the media for his engaging personality and a string of high-profile celebrity girlfriends. His years of hard partying eventually took their toll, and the now-31 year old joined second tier side Sportivo Estudiantes de San Luis earlier this season.

Following the discovery of the lump, the player was referred to a specialist cancer centre in Buenos Aires for a biopsy – the results of which are still unknown.

Argentine paper Clarin report that the club have said that they are doing everything they can to support the player and that they will stand by him throughout his recovery.

Fabbiani has also played for Newell’s Old Boys, CFR Cluj, Lanus, and Palestino during his illustrious career.
