The Dutchman has been accused of flip-flopping his formation and tactics, with several United fans blaming the changes for the side’s stuttering form.

At different times this season United have played 5-3-2, 4-4-2, 3-4-1-2, and 4-3-1-2, as well as a host of other variants, but Van Gaal claims it’s all part of a process. “I don’t think that is fair to call me indecisive.” he said

“There was a lot of education we had to do to play the system and the players have to work very hard.”

He also leapt to the defence of under-fire record signing Angel di Maria, who has failed to hit the highs he achieved at Madrid since arriving at Old Trafford.

“Di María was a record £59.7m and Falcao’s season-long loan is a total of £16m. So should they and any elite foreign footballer be able to settle instantly because this is why they cost so much?” he asked.

“No. It is because of the market. It is always like that. You pay because of the market and the greatness of Manchester United”.

United play Spurs in a crucial game in the race for the top four on Sunday afternoon.
