According to reports in the Daily Star, the Dutchman has made PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay his first-choice target, with his side believed to be in pole position – ahead of both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur – for the player’s signature.

The 21-year-old World Cup star is valued at around £15m, with van Gaal likely to use his national team connections to wrap up the deal. The pair helped the Dutch side reach the competition’s semi-finals last summer, where they eventually lost to Argentina.

Van Gaal will get another £150m to spend next summer, and will move quickly to pick up Depay, who has scored 21 goals in 31 games so far this season. PSV bosses are resigned to losing him, while the player reportedly wants to move to United over anyone else.
