The Chilean tactician looks highly unlikely to bring any silverware to the Etihad Stadium this season, with City dealt another blow to their title hopes with a weekend defeat to Burnley, whilst they also face a big task to get past Barcelona in the Champions League.

Mills sees parallells with Pellegrini’s predecessor Roberto Mancini, who was dismissed after failing to retain the title in 2013.

“If Manchester City are trophyless at the end of the season I would fear for Manuel Pellegrini’s job,” he said.

“We’ve seen it before at Manchester City, when Roberto Mancini managed to win the title one year but nothing the next, he didn’t stay in the job.”
