Even when injury troubles have been taken in to account the Argentine has been a disappointment since his move from Real Madrid. In 25 appearances the winger has managed eight assists and scored four times, but the six of the assists and three of the goals came before December. Some have linked this form to an attempted burglary on his house in January, which may have unsettled the 27-year-old.

As a result Di Maria has already been linked to a move away from Old Trafford, and his manager is open to letting him depart on compassionate grounds.

The Dutchman said: “I am always like that. When you see my history, that’s part of my philosophy. A player is not just a man who kicks the ball from A to B. His environment is influencing him. I shall always be open (to his sale) but I know that the commercial interests of the club and we have to respect that. You cannot give a lot of money for a player and next season put him out of your selection.”

The Red Devils will be hoping that this doesn’t distract them from their race for the top four. A recent 3-0 victory over Tottenham has given a major boost, and they are up against main rivals Liverpool next weekend.
