The Black Cats have won only two of their last 16, and with the club sitting just a point above the relegation zone, the Sunderland hierarchy – and supporters – have lost faith in the Uruguayan.

It’s reported that Poyet will take training as normal on Monday morning, but will meet with club officials after the session, and is expected to be told his 17-month spell with the Premier League strugglers is up.

Sunderland’s owner, Ellis Short, chief executive, Margaret Byrne, and sporting director, Lee Congerton allegedly decided after the 4-0 defeat to Villa on home-turf that a managerial change was necessary to give them any hope of surviving in the top-flight of English football.
