The Uruguayan has been under pressure for several weeks as the Black Cats have slipped closer and closer to the bottom three. Things appeared to come to a head during the heavy defeat to the Villans on Saturday, where several fans attempted to storm the dugout and many supporters left the stadium before even the first half had finished.

The North-East club are now just a point above 18th-placed Burnley after a run of six games without a win. They have also only managed a single victory in 2015, and four throughout the entire campaign.

The bookies have already given out odds on who the new manager could be, with West Ham boss Sam Allardyce and currently-unattached Dick Advocaat the early favourites for the role.
