Ricardo Carvalho has said that AS Monaco ‘must’ finish in the top three in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League this season.
The 36-year-old made his comeback to the side for their 3-0 triumph over SC Bastia on Friday evening, and looked remarkably fresh considering his spell on the sidelines.
Monaco’s victory leaves them in fourth place in the French table after the weekend’s results. The Club of the Principality sit on 50 points, one ahead of fifth-place Saint-Etienne and four behind Olympique Marseille, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Carvalho, whose Monaco side still have a game in hand on Marseille, argued that his side absolutely must seal Champions League qualification again.
“We played a serious match [against Bastia],” he began, “and we needed to.
“We absolutely must finish in the top three; everyone wants to play in the Champions League again next season.”
Carvalho will likely be present on Tuesday evening as Monaco contest the second-leg of their Last 16 CL tie with Arsenal at the Stade Louis II.
