Filipe Luis could make a shock return to La Liga champions Atletico Madrid this summer, despite only joining Chelsea at the start of the season.

The Blues paid £16 million to Atletico for the Brazilian, but he has so far been unable to displace current first-choice left back Cesar Azpilicueta in the starting XI.

Filipe Luis has managed a rather impressive 22 appearances this season, but has only played 11 times in the Premier League, and hasn’t been trusted by Jose Mourinho in any of his side’s big games.

The Daily Telegraph reports that despite Chelsea’s insistence last month that the 29-year-old was happy at Stamford Bridge, Diego Simeone is keen on bringing him back to the Vicente Calderon.

It is said a move could be forced if the full-back tells the club he wants to return to La Liga.

Chelsea, meanwhile, may look to improve their defensive options this summer, regardless of where Luis’ future lies. Jose Mourinho may want to retain the defender’s services rather than be forced into finding another replacement, but it’s difficult to keep hold of an unhappy player once he has made his mind up.
