The 26-year-old is reportedly being lined up by Valencia’s new billionaire owner Peter Lim, who is ready to cut short Mata’s time at Old Trafford in a deal worth £20m,which would represent a loss for the Red Devils.

Mata has struggled for minutes in an United shirt since the turn of the year, starting his first game since mid-January in the 3-0 win against Tottenham last Sunday.

The Spanish international made the switch from Premier League rivals Chelsea in last season’s January transfer window for a then club record fee of £37m, but has so far struggled to live up to that hefty price tag.

This season he has fallen behind the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Angel Di Maria in the pecking order under new manager Louis van Gaal.
