The Black Cats suspended the England international pending the outcome of a police investigation after being arrested at his £1.8 million mansion in County Durham. Johnson will now report to a police station in Durham on Tuesday 23rd April at 10am.

In a statement, the Wearside club said, “Following the decision by the police today (Tuesday), the club will be reviewing its position and will not make any further comment at the present time.”

Johnson has missed the last two games for Sunderland due to the suspension and has been training at home with a fitness coach in order to stay in good physical condition. The player could be available to new manager Dick Advocaat if the club decide to lift the temporary ban though.

Durham police force have also issued a warning to those using social media that identifying the alleged victim is a criminal offence.
