The Spaniard is set to enter the final year of his Old Trafford deal soon, and so far talks to extend his stay have failed to get through and make an impact.

With Real Madrid lurking, Red Devils chiefs want to tie him down to a longer contract after his scintillating form has been a major contributing factor to the club’s resurgence this year.

Madrid see the 24-year-old as the ideal replacement for veteran stopper Iker Casillas, but United are willing to make him the league’s highest paid goalkeeper by handing him a deal worth a reported £140,000 a week.

However, with Victor Valdes as backup, United would have a ready made replacement ready to step in should they loose their prized custodian.
