With eight games to go, Friday evening’s Championship clash between promotion-chasing rivals Wolves and Derby becomes a match that neither can afford to lose, as the movers and shakers in the race for the Premier League start to sneak their head in front.
Steve McLaren’s Rams have been disappointing in recent weeks, having set the pace for much of the early season. The injuries to strikers Darren Bent and Chris Martin have severely depleted their attacking options. Martin has contributed 16 league goals this season, while the Aston Villa loanee Bent, added another five strikes in just eight appearances since his move.
Their last win came back in February, when they beat Charlton. Defeat to Middlesbrough in midweek has left them in fifth, five points off the top two.
The home side had been on a poor run themselves, having gone three games without a victory. However, Tuesday’s emphatic win over Sheffield Wednesday has kept them in the hunt for a play-off spot. Another three points for Kenny Jackett’s men would bring them level on points with Brentford, who currently occupy that lucrative final place in the top six.
They could be without defender Richard Stearman for the game, while goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is a definite absentee.
Wolves will desperate to avoid a similar scoreline to the last time these two teams met. A brace for both Johnny Russell, and Jeff Hendrick helped Derby administer a 5-0 drubbing at the iPro Stadium.
