The 31-year-old’s current deal with the Catalan club expires at the end of this season, and it seemed that Alves was struggling to secure a new one, prompting an interest in joining Manchester United.

However, the Brazil international has gone cold on a move to the Premier League club, as the side continue to battle for a spot in next season’s Champions League. Their success in qualifying for continental football had proved to be a deal-breaker.

The right-back area continues to prove to be a problem for van Gaal. Antonio Valencia had enjoyed a decent run in the team, but a woeful performance in the FA Cup against Arsenal highlighted his frailties in the more defensive role. With Alves now seemingly off the radar, the Dutchman may step up his efforts to sign Southampton’s Nat Clyne.
