The Belgian has been in great form this campaign as the Blues have stormed to a six point lead at the top of the Premier League. He has scored 15 goals, going some way to ridding his reputation as a player who should score far more for his ability. The 24-year-old has also managed to grab eight assists in the 42 games he has played.

However, there are other names that will likely be in the mix for the best player award. Alexis Sanchez has had a great first season at Arsenal, Harry Kane has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Tottenham, and David De Gea has almost single handedly kept Manchester United in the hint for the Champions League qualification places.

Mourinho said: “When he won that award [PFA Young Player of the Year] it was not a big thing for him. He was not particularly emotional because he doesn’t want to be the best young player.

“He wants to be the best player of the year. He wants to be the best, to improve his game, score more goals. I still call him a kid but he’s a man and he’s a great player.

“And he can get even better, but he’s reached a fantastic level and a high level of stability. Sometimes he has an amazing match, next match sometimes not so good. But even when he’s bad, he’s never bad.”
