The Reds manager told the Liverpool Echo that his team would benefit from a big psychological boost if they can win the game.

“There’s still a long way to go. There are still big games to play. But I think from being so far behind and in a short of period then clawing it back and possibly going above United will psychologically help the players” he said.

“It would allow us to have two weeks to analyse the developments and go again against Arsenal. Whatever way it goes on Sunday, I don’t think it makes it clear where you finish. It is still very close and very tight.”

“We had big pressure games against Tottenham, Southampton and Manchester City and won them so we know we can cope with the pressure. We just need to focus on our performance. We’re playing with confidence and will look to continue our momentum.”

Liverpool sit two points behind van Gaal’s men, and would leapfrog them into fourth spot with a win. Kickoff is at 1:30pm on Sunday.
