Dick Advocaat will want to get off to the perfect start as he begins his tenure as Sunderland head coach following the dismissal of Gus Poyet earlier in the week.
It’s unclear whether it’s a good or bad time for the Dutch coach to start his stewardship of the Black Cats after such a humiliating defeat last weekend at the hands of Aston Villa but the good news is they’re facing a side who have just a poor record as Sunderland.
In fact the two sides have almost identical records over the last six games with only three points garnered and a poor FA Cup exit at the same stage of the competition apiece.
West Ham will likely bring Carl Jenkinson straight back into the fold after he sat out the Hammers 3-0 smashing by Arsenal as he was illegible to face his parent club. Carlton Cole could also recover to make the squad.
Meanwhile, Winston Reid is a major doubt with a hamstring problem and James Tomkins and Enner Valencia are still missing.
Adam Johnson could make a shock return to the Sunderland squad with the club lifting his suspension that was imposed following his arrest for allegedly having sex with a minor.
John O’Shea and Sebastain Larsson are both fighting to be fit whilst Advocaat could call on 21-year-old striker Duncan Watmore.
