The Red Devils undoubtedly started out the better of the two teams, carving a Liverpool side, who looked visibly nervous and scared to attack, open at will. That pressure soon told, with a deserved Juan Mata goal putting the visitors 1-0 up, much to the delight of the away support.

Manchester United confidence was free flowing, as you can see in this brilliant dummy from Daley Blind which sent Emre Can flying.

Liverpool did manage to carve out a chance though, which Adam Lallana spurned once given an opening at goal.

Liverpool’s second half got off to the worst start possible as Steven Gerrard, who had come on as a half-time substitute for Adam Lallana, was sent off after only 40 seconds on the pitch, following a stamp on Ander Herrera.

Manchester United soon made Liverpool pay, as Juan Mata scored an absolute beauty for his second goal, compounding Merseyside misery.

From then on Liverpool seemed galvanised, playing with a lot of intensity, but not much end product. Until Daniel Sturridge pulled one back for the home side, putting them right back in the game.

The Reds struggled to have much of an impact on the game for the remainder, as it should be expected having a man less. The Red Devils were gifted a penalty in the dying embers of stoppage time, but Wayne Rooney was thwarted by Simon Mignolet.

As a last action in the game, Martin Skrtel was lucky not to be sent off for a stamp on David de Gea after leaving a foot in when challenging him for the ball.
