Such a comment is sure to hurt MOTD regulars Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker, and Mark Lawrenson, who are yet to return fire on the Frenchman with a jibe of their own.

The BBC show has become an institution among football fans across the country, but the commentators and pundits are often slated.

Wenger said: “Sometimes I watch Match of the Day to see how we’ve been perceived. It’s better to watch it with the sound turned down.”

The 65-year-old will be hoping that the MOTD crowd aren’t given any ammunition by poor performances from the Gunners in coming weeks.

They have a big game against Liverpool a week on Saturday, and the Lineker et al will surely be itching to jump on anything that goes wrong for the North London club.
