When Simon Mignolet required treatment following a challenge from Wayne Rooney in the Liverpool vs Manchester United game on Sunday, it didn’t appear as if the Belgian’s injury was too severe, but it now appears to indeed look quite serious.

Mignolet posted a picture from his official Twitter account showing the extent of his ankle injury.

In a week where Martin Skrtel was retrospectively charged for his stamp on David de Gea in stoppage time of the game at Anfield, could United captain Rooney be facing a similar outcome for his challenge on the Reds keeper?

The Liverpool number one has been steadily improving since returning to the side during the Christmas period after coming under-fire for his shaky performances in goal at the start of the season, and is now doubtful for Belgium’s qualifiers against Cyprus and Israel, whilst his participation in the Reds crucial game away at Arsenal after the international break must be a worry for manager Brendan Rodgers.
