In a wide ranging interview with specialist magazine Shooting Gazette – no really! – Campbell actually says one of the key reasons he got into the sport was because ‘that banter was lovely’.

“I managed to shoot 11 birds having never picked up a gun before,” he said to the Shooting Gazette, via Daily Mirror.

“Last year I went to a couple of clay ranges, Bywell and another one in Newcastle, and I was quite the natural. I am very competitive so I really listen to instruction. It was enjoyable.

“This year I shot about 30 birds – much to the annoyance of my father-in-law. That was a mixture of birds. The banter was just lovely… that’s always great.”

Insert clever joke about how Arsenal are called the Gunners and now Sol Campbell is now shooting real guns.

This latest foray into the magical world of Sol Campbell’s Cosvervative adventures follows the news that the ex-Arsenal man was seen as a prospective Tory candidate for the London mayoral elections in 2016 and there were even suggestions he was being vetted to run for a set in Parliament in the upcoming General Election.

Whilst this now looks unlikely, Campbell says he is continuing to work on issues in sport and of diversity with the party.

Campbell retired from football in 2011 after successful spells at Arsenal, Tottenham and Portsmouth.
