Manchester United defensive duo could be set for summer exits

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones could both be soon heading for the Old Trafford exit door according to the Daily Mail – despite being Manchester United’s first choice defensive partnership right now.

The duo’s contracts are set to expire at the end of next season and it is believed that talks are yet to begin with either player, which may come as surprise for some United fans given their current form.

Recent victories over Tottenham and Liverpool have been hailed as the club’s best performances of the season – two games in which Smalling and Jones have started and played very well together, showing signs of a partnership that had been touted as the next Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic a few years ago.

But despite this, it appears that the United hierarchy are in no rush to tie down either player, prompting speculation that they could cash in on one or both in the next transfer window.

Smalling has recently been linked with a move to rivals Arsenal, while his England teammate Jones could find himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford next season with the club expected to strengthen their defensive department in the summer.
