England captain Wayne Rooney has claimed that a lot of teams will be frightened of the Three Lions following their 4-0 win over Lithuania, which continued their perfect start to Euro 2016 qualification.

Rooney scored the opening goal – his 47th for his country, moving him within two of Sir Bobby Charlton’s record – while Danny Welbeck, Raheem Sterling, and debutant Harry Kane completed a comfortable night for the hosts at Wembley.

Speaking after the game, Rooney said: “I think since the World Cup we’ve been fantastic. Some great victories, we’re scoring goals, really energetic team, a lot of pace and I think a lot of teams around Europe will be looking at this team and they’ll be frightened.”

Roy Hodgson’s side have won seven successive matches since their low key exit from the World Cup in the summer, when they claimed just one point from their three games and were sent home after the group stage.

England are already closing in on their place in France next summer, and are no doubt determined to be more competitive at their next major tournament.

The event will mark four years since Roy Hodgson took over as England boss, when we missed out on a place in the semi-finals after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy – our opponents for a friendly game on Tuesday.
