The Dutchman, who has played under United boss Louis van Gaal for the Netherlands national team, including at last summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, is supposedly on the club’s radar ahead of the summer as they seek to strengthen at the back.

De Vrij has performed well since moving to Serie A, but the player himself has admitted he knows nothing of any approach from the Red Devils, playing down talk that he could be looking to quit the Stadio Olimpico at the end of the season.

“I do not know anything about Manchester United’s interest in me, but I’m used to the media linking me with other teams,” he said.

“Meanwhile, I’m very happy at Lazio, everything’s going well and I’m just focusing on this.”

United signed Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon last summer but remain short of quality in defence after some unconvincing performances from the likes of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones throughout the season, while youngsters like Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair have played a surprisingly high number of first-team matches.
