The German international is into the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu and can walk away from the club on a free at the end of this season, with Schalke believed to be among the leading contenders to snap him up.

However, Chelsea are also seemingly keen to sign the 27-year-old, who has played under Blues boss Jose Mourinho during his time in charge at the Spanish giants.

Khedira has enjoyed a distinguished career so far, winning La Liga under Mourinho at Real, the Champions League last season, and the World Cup with the German national side last summer.

Chelsea already have plenty of options in midfield with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Ramires, but may be attracted to the possibility of landing such a quality player for free next season.
