Manchester United are reportedly set to face strong competition from AS Roma in their bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory van der Wiel this summer, according to the Daily Express.

The Netherlands international has been out of favour with PSG this season and seems likely to be on the move this summer, the Express claims, though Serie A giants Roma are now stepping up their interest in winning the race for his signature.

United are seemingly considering van der Wiel as one of a number of options to improve at right-back, with manager Louis van Gaal perhaps unconvinced by his current options in that position, with Antonio Valencia playing in the unfamiliar defensive role for most of this season.

Nathaniel Clyne of Southampton and Dani Alves of Barcelona are others to be linked with United in that part of the pitch in recent times, and it may be that they will end up being more realistic targets as van der Wiel could make the move to the Stadio Olimpico instead.
