According to the article legendary Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson traveled to Germany in 2012 to try and bring a trio of BVB stars to Old Trafford. Although he only succeeded with Shinji Kagawa, the Scot also attempted to sign Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels. It has now emerged that the latter promised to go to United were he ever to move abroad.

Recently new manager Louis van Gaal has reignited the Old Trafford side’s interest in the centre-back but faces competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal according to the report.

With Dortmund struggling in the Bundesliga and looking unlikely to be in the Champions League next season, both teams could have a chance of luring the World Cup winner to England.
