His father Gheorghe was widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the world in the late 1980s and the 1990s. Nicknamed “The Maradona of the Carpathians”, he picked up 124 caps for his country and scored 35 goals – winning the Romanian footballer of the year award seven times in the process.

His club career took him to both Barcelona and Real Madrid, and he featured prominently in the 1994 World Cup and 2000 European Championships. He didn’t play in the 1998 World Cup after briefly retiring from international football before reversing his decision.

Since retiring from football he has managed Galatasaray twice and the Romanian national side.
