Gomez had been touted for a move to the Nou Camp, but the 29-year-old insists that the lure of playing alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez isn’t enough to tempt him away from La Viola. Of course, it may be that the form and calibre of the Barca strikeforce is intimidating to Gomez, who would struggle for playing time in such a fluid and talented forward line.

Since swapping Germany for Florence, Gomez has suffered with injury and not had the impact he would have wanted, though he has bagged nine goals this season in 21 appearances and said, “I’m in the sights of Barcelona? The rumours do not interest me, I want to stay in Florence.

“I came Fiorentina to win, I have a goal that I have not yet reached.”

The German striker was part of the Stuttgart side which won the Bundesliga title, before then moving to Bayern Munich, for somewhere between €30-35 million, and winning the league twice more, along with two German Cups and a Champions League title.
