In a interview with Sky Sports, the former Arsenal man was critical of Townsend’s inclusion in the England squad when it was announced, citing he had only been called up because of Roy Hodgson’s loyalty to the player after he helped the Three Lions to secure a place at the 2014 World Cup.

The Spurs man responded to those claims by scoring the equaliser in the 1-1 draw against Italy in midweek and fired back at Merson with the tweet below:

And after initially apologising to the 23-year-old in another interview with Sky Sports, Merson has come out with all guns blazing and raised the stakes by telling the winger to go out and win some silverware!:

“I think he should concentrate on playing football, to be honest, and don’t worry about me.” The two-time league title winner with the Gunners said in the Daily Star.

“But I have no problems with him coming back, although I’d also say win some medals first before you call it on.” he added.

Townsend did come close to winning his first trophy when his Spurs side reached the Capital One cup final last month, but lost against London rivals Chelsea at Wembley.
