The club’s Sporting director, Jose Luis Perez Caminero, has lavished praise on the Belgian, revealing that they are counting on him to return to the Spanish capital in time for the 2015-16 campaign.

The defender has played a crucial role in inspiring Ronald Koeman’s side’s top four push this year, although the Saints do look set to fall short of a spot in the Champions League. However, a Europa League place is still well within their reach as they aim to consolidate a top seven finish.

According to the Daily Mail, the 26-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. However, Diego Simeone want both Alderweireld and Oliver Torres, on loan with Porto, to return to his squad.

Caminero said of the pair: “Our coaches follow a detailed monitoring of all the players that are loaned to other teams.

“We are very pleased with their performance and growth in general. Oliver [Torres] and Alderweireld, for example, are finishing a very good season with Porto and Southampton and we are counting on them for the next campaign.”
