The 29-year-old’s contract at the Etihad runs out in the summer, and the Reds are favourites to sign him according to the report. With club legend Steven Gerrard leaving the Merseyside club in the summer, it is likely that manager Brendan Rodgers will be looking for a new central midfielder.

However, now the Serie A giants have joined the chase, with former Sky Blues manager Mancini at the helm. The Italian brought the England international to the Citizens back in 2010 when he was in charge, and clearly thinks of him as a top class player.

The 50-year-old said: “Milner’s contract is expiring. He’ll decide what’s best for him. In the summer we’ll sign a top player, because we are Inter, a top team.”

Were they to be beaten to the signing of the former Aston Villa man it would be a massive blow to Liverpool, who are only just reacting to the news that key player Raheem Sterling has told the BBC that he is flattered by interested from Arsenal.
