United have been linked with a move for the Dutch international in each of the past two transfer windows, but have held off making a concrete offer until he undergoes serious surgery on his injured knee.

The 25-year-old made a tentative return to action in November, but quickly suffered a setback and is now not likely to feature again before the end of the current campaign.

However, reports in the Manchester Evening News claim that Louis Van Gaal still has the midfielder placed at the top of his summer wish list.

The report even suggests that Van Gaal would prefer to gamble on Strootman rather than make a move to bring back former academy graduate Paul Pogba, who is still being tipped to leave Juventus.

But a move would still be entirely dependent on his fitness, and Van Gaal would not be afraid to explore other options should things not work out.
