Fenerbache had won 5-1 against Rizespor earlier in the day when their bus came under fire from what is believed to be a shotgun and the driver was wounded according to Turkish Football.

It’s unclear just who the assailant was but there are unverified claims the attack was committed by Trabzonspor supporters.

Turkish Football, meanwhile, quotes Fenerbahce board member Mehmet Uslu who says the team feel lucky to be alive.

“We were travelling across the viaduct when the incident occurred, the driver was shot and we are lucky not to have had a serious crash that would have destroyed the bus,” he said.

“The driver was seriously wounded and is currently in intensive care.”

Fenerbahce staff and officials were taken by armoured vehicle to Trabzon airport where they are waiting to board a flight back to the Turkish capital.

It is speculated that the attacker tried to force the bus off the road at such high speeds by targeting the driver, in an attempt to cause a crash and mass casualties to those on-board.

Below are a series of Tweets purporting to show the bus that was attacked – Warning that some images are quite graphic and contain blood.
