The Red Devils are known to be in the market for new talent in the attacking midfield positions, with players like Angel Di Maria and Juan Mata struggling to impress consistently over the course of this season.

Louis van Gaal spent big in the transfer market last summer and looks set to do so again this year as he lines up a move for the in-form 23-year-old, who recently scored the winner for the Brazilian national team in their friendly against Chile at the Emirates Stadium.

This follows an eye-catching season in the Bundesliga, with Firmino contributing six goals and seven assists so far and looking like one of the best young talents in the German top flight.

It now looks as though United have made real progress in a deal to snap him up, beating Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to his signature.
